A vegetable farmer in his tomato patch outside Baracoa.
The farmers told me they purchased the land from the government during Covid and they sell their harvests privately at farm stands. Apparently, the government has been encouraging more small farming due to the country’s severe food shortage. It’s rare to find lettuce in Baracoa, even in restaurants that cater to tourists.
(This farmer is 72, and was watering his large beds with a watering can. See a draft story about the farmers in my email.)
