Farm worker Milda Guttierez Rameriez in the mountains above Baracoa, Cuba

She was hauling a burlap bag with her machete and morning harvest of beans.

Milda harvests crops on the mountain for a cooperative named Jose Marti. When she turned onto a narrow dirt path through the forest, she pointed to her home - a modest, tin roof hut, in a beautiful clearing doted with palm trees. She invited me to follow for coffee.

Despite her hard work and subsistence life on the mountain, she smiled and laughed readily.
(see photo of her preparing coffee over a wood fire inside the home and serving it to me.)
