In war-weary Northern Uganda, a $500 million U.S. AID project, dubbed NUDEIL, is providing valued new infrastructure to spur renewal-- gravel roads, wells for safe and accessible drinking water, and schools. The construction is being implemented by Winrock International. NUDEIL projects are built with community labor, rather than using heavy machinery, in order to provide subsistence farmers with needed for their children's school fees and home staples.
The region has been peaceful in recent years after a 15-year brutal insurgency led by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). Nearly every family was impacted by the war. Most were forced to leave their huts and farms for bleak, idle lives in protective government military camps. Those camps began gradually disbanding began three years ago.
