Stone Cutters of Likoni. In Likoni, Kenya men with picks toil all day in the hot sun to cut stones from a quarry. On a good day, they can cut 30 stones. With pay of 10 schillings each, they earn 300 schillings a day, about $3.75 a day. Some of the men are local, others told me they traveled from 2,000 km away, because it was the only work they could find to feed their families. The quarry was said to be one of the most dangerous places in the region, but I found the men welcoming, warm, and humble. Several invited me to visit their homes. They seemed proud of their physical labor, and that they were willing to work hard for their money.
