Stone Cutters of Likoni. In Likoni, Kenya men with picks toil all day in the hot sun to cut stones from a quarry. On a good day, they can cut 30 stones. With pay of 10 schillings each, they earn 300 schillings a day, about $3.75 a day. Some of the men are local, others told me they traveled from 2,000 km away, because it was the only work they could find to feed their families. The remote quarry was said to be a dangerous place, but I found the men welcoming, warm, and humble. They seemed proud of their capacity for back-breaking work.
